My Friend The Enemy by: Dan Smith 281 pages Historical Fiction Main Characters: Peter Kim and Erik Summer, 1941, Northumberland, England Summary Peter saw a Heinkel coming towards him and ran for the hills. The engine stuttered then stopped completely and fell. It fell directly in front of Peter. He saw a parachute far away in the woods. A little while later, Peter and his new friend, Kim were hunting for souvenirs when the found something. Not something, someone. He was the escaped German airman. His name was Erik. He was seriously hurt and needed help, fast. Kim and Peter needed to lie and steal to keep him alive. They were feeling guilty, but they did it for a good reason; since they were helping Erik, maybe if Kim's brother or Peter’s dad got hurt someone would help him. As soon as Peter had heard that his dad had died in the war, he knew exactly what to do; he went straight to Erik and threatened to kill him. He said it was all Erik’s fault. Erik already felt guilty, but this, this just made it feel a whole lot worse. After Peter calmed down everything was okay, until it wasn't. A group of bullies had ruined his dad's shed and when Peter and Kim went to pick up the supplies they got confronted again. They got into a really bad fistfight and when Peter got hurt Kim went to back him up. She got knocked out and Erik shot the gun in the air so everyone would stop talking so he could shout at them in German. The bullies ran away and got the sheriff. Peter and Erik carried Kim to the doctor. They exposed Erik in front of everyone in town. Peter was afraid that they were going to do something bad to him. Review I would recommend this book to fifth through seventh graders because it has some swearing and a lot of fighting. I think boys might like it more than girls because it seems like a topic that they would enjoy reading about. I would specifically recommend this book to Page because she likes books with action and adventure. I would not recommend this book to anybody who doesn't like stories about World War Two.
It really doesn't have that much swearing, but I think it will be the too complicated for most fourth graders, they might get confused. If you were talking about Natalie, however, I think she would understand it.
Title: My Brothers Secret Author: Dan Smith # of pages: 295 Genre: Non-fiction Main characters: Karl,Lisa,Stefen. review: I would recommend this book to anyone who likes WW1 or a story about a group of rebels fighting for what's right but if they get caught they will get tortured and slowly killed. specifically, I would recommend this book to Kaleb because he like action books like spy or rebel books. “Then their father is killed in combat, and what had been a game becomes deadly serious. Karl’s faith in Hitler is shaken, and he’s left with nothing but questions. His Hitler a national hero- or a villain killing Germany's father's? What is the meaning of the flower stitched inside Stefens jacket? And what is the mission of the shadow group he belongs to? Karl soon finds out as he becomes involved in a dangerous rebellion against the Nazis.” (Back of the book.)
Summary: In this book the main character is Karl a 13 year old boy wanting to join the Nazis. But this all change when his father is killed in Russia. He used to love the Nazis and want to be just like them. But he moves in with his grandparents because his mom is sick and in shock from his father dying. He wants to join so he follows his brother into the night. They almost got caught but they luckily escape. The next day Gerhard Wolff a dangerous general comes to there house to take Stefen. They take him to HeadQuarters and lock him in his cell. can Karl and Lisa rescue him. Read the book to find out.
I like how when you did your summary you didn't give away the whole story. It seems kind of like the book I read, My Friend The Enemy, since they are both related to fighting Adolf Hitler and the Nazis.
The Making of a Navy SEAL Author: Brandon Webb Genre: Autobiography Main characters: Brandon Webb Glenn Pages: 207 Summary This is a book about a kid who, when he grows up he wants to become a Navy SEAL so he has to train his hardest. When he gets to the training program he thinks he's gonna get through, then when people start dropping like flies he think he's going to be next. He manages to tough it out and make it to the next phase of the training and get to the BUD/S, but you're gonna have to read the book to find out Review I think this is a very good book for 4th grade and up because it is not to hard to read but not very easy, I think it would be a nice challenge for a 4th grader. I like the book because it's giving out most of the details but not the boring ones like the orange in the bowl was orange. Another reason I like the book is because it does a very good job at making it seem like you actually there with him and all of his friend, partners, and his leaders.
Title: Winning Chess: Tactics and Strategies Authors: Ted Nottingham, Al Lawrence, and Bob Wade Genre: Informational Main Characters: Garry Kasparov, Bobby Fischer, Charlemagne. # of Pages: 127 Summary: This book talks about different tactics and strategies to use to win a chess game. Some of the moves are called The Fork, The Pin, Discovered Attack, and The Skewer, and also talks about famous chess players some of them are named Bobby Fischer, Garry Kasparov, and Charlemagne. Out of those three people Bobby Fischer would be my chess idol because he's an all time grandmaster chess player and really well known around the world.
Review: (How did you like the book, and why? What was your favorite part? What did you like the most/the least about this book? Who would you recommend it to, and why?) I liked this book because it showed and talked about a lot of different chess moves and history of famous players. My favorite part was when it talked about the top four best chess players to become world champions at young ages #4: Boris Spassky was eighteen years and seven months old when he became world champion, #3: Bobby Fischer was fifteen years, six months, and one day old, Judith Polar in fifteen years, four months, and twenty-eight days old when she became world champion, and Peter Leko was fourteen years, four months, and twenty-two days old when he became world champion, but the youngest person ever to become Grandmaster was Etienne Bacrot who became Grandmaster at just fourteen years, and two months old, and that's amazing.

Gerta must find a way to get the other half of her family together again she will dig tunnels, hide in abandoned buildings, Gerta will do whatever it takes to get her family back together.
Review This book reminds me of the song You don't know what you got until it's gone because Geta is at the phase where she thinks her family is super annoying and she is embarrassed to be seen with them until she was separated and realized how much she loves them.
After reading your Summary and Review, I will definitely read this book! I love reading about Historical Fiction, so this sounds like the book for me. I like how in your review you said the book reminded you of a song.
Charles Schulz was born on November 26,1992. Also, his nickname was “Sparky,” as the book says on page 11, “Before he was a week old, his uncle nicknamed him ‘Sparky.’ For some reason the baby reminded him of Sparky, the sad-eyed horse from the popular comic strip Barney Google who unexpectedly became the big winner of a race.” Sparky, was in the army for quite a long time, but soon he was promoted to being a staff sergeant and also a squad leader. Also, when Charles was in the army, he still drew pictures, and eventually when the other soldiers saw him drawing, they asked him to make pictures for the cards that they would send to their family's. Sparkey never liked the name peanuts and he wanted the name to be Li’l Folks, but another comic strip had already used a name very similar to that. He had a girlfriend who agreed to become engaged with him. She was a red-haired woman named Donna. But she decided that she wouldn't want to be with someone that hadn't grown up with. She decided that she wanted to marry another man she had known for a while and that had gone to church with her and she had known everything in the world about him. Charles was very upset, but later on he married a woman that he very much loved and that there was no one the world that he would rather be with, not even Donna. This woman's name was Jeannie. Sparky got mail from fans and even answered them. He also answered phone calls that he would get from young and old fans. After creating almost 18,000 strips and in more than 2,600 newspapers around the whole world, Charles last cartoon strip was showed on a Sunday in February on the 13 in 2000. Sparkey died in his sleep, the night before his final comic strip had appeared. He died on February 12.
Recommendation- I would recommend this book to Reed because she loves Charlie Brown, just like me. I loved this book, but I noticed that it had a lot of additional information instead of the more important things. My mom and I were looking on a website and it had more information that seemed more important than what was in the book. But what I really don't honestly understand is why the website that I looked up had the same information as the book. But, over that, really really loved and enjoyed this book entirely.

review:
How I liked the book was that I thought it was very interesting because all of The exciting moments and all of the scary, exciting, and surprising. What i liked about this book mostly is how exciting it is and the huge rush that goes through your body when you read the life threatening moments in all of the four orphans time with conor. The moment i liked the most was when tobias finds the hidden pathways in farthenwood and finds saige peeking into the betrayed princesses room and tobias takes the stollen knife from the kitchen and pokes it into saige's back while threatening saige to make sure he does not become prince.I would recommend this book to whoever likes a good adventure in a story for example “If I had to do it all over again I would not have chosen this life. then again I'm not sure I ever had a choice.”pg 1- Saige, or a book that is really scary for example “He pressed the long end of the blade into my back and I stiffened as felt it cut. it was A razor sharp knife.”pg 166- Saige , I would recommend this book to anybody 5th grade and older or any middle school student.

Review: I think that this was a good book because it was intense
Summary In the book this kid named donn and his dad and some other people go up a mt.katahdin and donn and his friend Henry go ahead and leave his dad behind and donn wonts to go back but gets lost of the tail. Few days later donn is getting eating alive by bugs. Donn looses his pants and shoes. Donn only eats strawberries and only drinks water. Finally on the ninth day donn found a camp and there were 2 people there that helped him the to the hospital and his mom and dad was there.
Review I thought this book was good. It was my second time reading it. I liked it because it was mostly one character the whole book and not two people. This is a good thing because you can focus on one character. I think that Tyler would like this book because Donn gets eaten alive by bugs because he lost his pants and shoes.Tyler would like this because he would be happy it didn’t happen to him.
Title: Diary of a wimpy kid old school author: Jeff Kinney Genre:realistic fiction main character:mom and dad number of pages: 217
Summary I liked this book because the father and his friend Rowley barey forks around the neighborhood and if someone is trying to beat them up they dig a fork up and stabe them it is really funny. I also like this book because when i read a book i dont like it to be boring and if it is dont read it. This book is mainly about the dad and his friend Rowley do stuff so that they don't get hurt and the dad said to his kids that they can't go in the woods and the kids said why cant we go in the woods you did when you was a kid and the dad said well i had stuff in the ground so that was different so you can't go in the woods because you could get hurt.
review 7. I recommend this book to Spencer because he never read this book. I would also recommend this book 3/6 because it is not to hard. I also think that Hunter should read this book. I also would recommend this book to all the people who like this series and has not read this book because it is the newest one and it is funny. 1.The theme of the story is that the parents don't want their kids going around the neighborhood because they are not safe. The parents said you can’t go in the woods the kids said why u did when you were a kid the parents said that is a little different because we bairey forks and if we were in a bad situation they would dig up a fork and stab them. So that is why the kids can't go in the woods or go around town because they are not safe.
Summary The book is about a boy that got lost in the woods in Maine. Donn, Donn’s dad and his friend Henry were taking a hike on a mountain in Maine. Donn and Henry was so far up ahead, they started to walk back But he went off the trail And got really lost and can't find his way out of of the wood. They struggle in the woods. They sleep under trees to keep shelter from rain. He found his way out of the woods. He found a road and walked it until he can find cars and tell them that he wants to go to his house, get new clothes on, and maybe take a shower.
Review I liked this book because it’s a kid that got lost on a mountain and struggles to get out of the woods. I liked that he was brave. I recommend this book to Avery because he likes nature and he makes really cool stuff out of sticks.
I have read this book before Brett and I your summary because it gives you a good idea of what the book is about but it does not give a way the whole story Good Job!!!

Title: The President Has Been Shot Author: James L. Swanson Page Numbers: 198 Genre: Autobiography and a Biography Main characters: John F. Kennedy and his wife, vice president and his wife, and the governour and his wife
Summary
This book is about the 35 president in the United States of America and about his family and the assassination. This president is John F. Kennedy. John F. Kennedy was born in 1917 and was killed in 1963. Why don’t we get a little bit of background of the story. Beginning Of Story John F. Kennedy the youngest man ever elected president of the United States. He was born in Brookline Massachusetts. THis young h had political blood in his veins because his maternal grandfather John “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald had been a Democratic Mayor of Boston. And his own father, Joseph P. Kennedy, served in President Franklin Roosevelt’s administration as ambassador to Great Britain in the years leading up to the Second World War. Middle Of Story This is when the assassination process began. He was traveling to Dallas, Texas for the lunch for more than two thousand. This guy that was waiting for him was a guy that Kennedy would not want to meet. This guy wanted to put him to his death.
End Of Story As they were driving away from the lunch the shots came one after another. The first shot was missed, but the very last two hit him and killed Kennedy almost instantly. The other people like the vice president and his wife and the governour and his wife were both in danger. The vice president and the governour were injured, but not super badly.
Review:
I would recommend this book to someone who wants to learn about presidents and about life and what it was like. In this book I do not have a favorite because it is mostly pretty sad. I like this book because it gave me information about Kennedy’s earlier life. What I liked most about this book is that I got learn how hard it is to be a president. What I liked least about this book was the beginning.
I love Historical-Fiction, but I sometimes think that books about history are boring. Are there any boring parts of this book? Is it boring before they tell you about when he was shot? Do you think I would enjoy this book?
Title- Enchanted Air Author- Margarita Engle Main Characters- Setting- Cuba and the USA in 1962 Number of Pages: 185
Summary- This book is a memoir about a girl named Margarita, who is different than most other kids her age. The story starts out with her in Cuba living with most of her family, enjoying the summer. She spends her time wandering, drawing and observing the people who ride horses or milk cows and other things she wishes she could do. She is told she is too young. Then, summer ends and she has to go back to the USA where she has to live in her other house. Then, something horrible happens. The US attacks Cuba and no one is safe. Times become harder and then Margarita has to go to school where everyone talks badly of Cuba and she gets very few friends. The rest of the book she faces challenges whether it's her not fitting in in school or missing family in Cuba. The question is will her family that lives in Cuba survive the war? Will the place she dreams about still be the same after the war? Well, you will have to read it to find out.
Review- I thought this book was really good. The author is really great at being dramatic but truthful. This is a memoir about Margarita, but while talking about her life and growing up she also teaches you about Cuba and the Cuban War. I would recommend this book to 6th grade and up because it may be easy to read, but can also be kind of dark at some points.
You did a great job with your summary! You didn't give the whole book away but just enough information for people to get a good idea what the book is about. I might consider reading this book for a free choice! Thanks for sharing.
Title: Heros of 9/11 Author: Allan Zullo Number of Pages: 180 Genre: Informational Main Characters: Jay Jonas, David Lim, Ross Terranova, Kevin Murray, Mike Kosowski, Chuck Sereika, etc Setting. NYC, Pentagon, Pennsylvania Summary: This book is (explained simply) 10 stories about 9/11. They exemplify heroes who put everyone else before themselves in a time of need. All of the stories start the same, as a normal day. Then all of a sudden radios and phones start going off about the first plane hitting the WTC(World Trade Center), people thought it was a mistake and began to move towards the building to help. All of a sudden a second plane hits and chaos begins to happen and that's when some of the stories start to differ. From a group of people stuck under crushed rubble trying to get out to a man piling people into a trailer to be safe from the north tower's collapse. And at the end of the day no one wanted a reward or lots of recognition; people just wanted to make sure as many people survived as possible. So this book is about great men and women who risked their lives to save as many people as possible. Your Review: I personally really liked this book and normally I’m not the biggest fan of most books. It is very well written and it is just good to have an idea of the disaster that happened if you were not alive during the event. I thought that some of the events that happened were truly amazing, like how a man who had lost his paramedic license put on his old uniform and helped remove two cops who were in very deep debris. This took a total of 8 hours, then he left the scene without letting anybody know who he was. Not only did the man not get immediate recognition but he also didn't ask for it which makes him an honorable person. Stories like these show us the good in people and who we should aspire to be like, that's why I loved this book. So as I said before this is a great book for anyone with an interest and anyone who was not alive at the event’s occurrence
Galen this is pretty good. Did the plane crashes take 8 hrs or did the whole crashing of the buildings happen in 8 hrs? Who is the man in your review. What do you mean by nobody wanted rewards or recognition.
Summary: Chew on This was about what fast food is really made of. If you do read this book it could change your outlook on fast food forever. I say this because fast food isn't very healthy for you and it talks about all the grease that is on it and all of the other unhealthy ingredients. It also mentions history about how fast food started. The author also includes how the history of some of the first fast food restaurants and how they were different then. The point the author was trying to get to when writing this book was the reality of what your eating because sometimes people only pay attention to how the food tastes. After all on the cover of the book it says "everything you don't want to know about fast food".
Review: I really enjoyed this book because I was always learning something knew and I was interested the whole time I was reading. I would recommend this book to anyone who doesn't mind knowing how unhealthy fast food is for you. Reading this book it really sends a message to you which I think is exactly what the author's intention were. Also I would recommend this book to fifth grade and up because it may not be as interesting to anyone younger than that.
Do you think you will ever be able to eat fast food again? Also do you think I would like the book or get to grossed out? Overall good job Emma on your summery and review. Have a nice day.
I don't usually eat fast food anyway so it didn't really change my outlook on fast food Nuala. I think that you would like book because honestly I was kind of relieved after reading this because it felt nice to know what the truth was about fast food and you might feel the same way if you decide to read this. Have a wonderful day Nuala.
Summary: This was a book all about the life of Houdini. To summarize, Houdini started off with many small shows making small amounts of money. Then he started making lots of money doing many shows. Houdini then went to Europe where he was an instant hit, touring all around blowing the minds of many. Returning to the U.S Houdini continued to invent new tricks and escapes. Houdini was then fascinated by flying and learned to fly. He then became the first person to fly in Australia, but flying then left him as fast as it had come. Then, when Houdini’s mother died he turned to mediums, trying to connect, but he knew that it was a lie. Houdini later became obsessed with revealing phony mediums and proving how fake they were. Houdini, at the same time was feeling tired and worn out from his still busy schedule. He fractured an ankle, but continued on in his performance, but soon after Houdini was proving his resistance to abdomen blows to a curious man. The man, while punching Houdini, left Houdini in pain, unbearable pain. Houdini later died because he had appendicitis and the blows to his chest had only worsened his condition. He was buried next to his mother.
Review: I think this was a great book. It was able to keep me thoroughly entertained while still giving me loads of information. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Houdini and is in 5th grade and up. The best parts of the book were when Houdini did his escapes because they were just really cool to read about.
Title: Titanic Young Survivors Author: Allan Zullo Page Count: 177 Genre: Informational Setting: April 14-15, 1912 when the Titanic went on its maiden voyage
Summary: This book is about tragedies of young people on the ship the Titanic. All of these stories are about the few miraculous survivors from the sinking of the Titanic. In these stories it told about how they survived and how they struggled through the freezing night. Less than half of the passengers survived that night due to the lack of lifeboats aboard the ship. Then the book told about how the survivors helped and were helped aboard the Carpathia. Many women were widowed during this tragedy. No survivors live today although one lived until 2009.
Review: I would recommend this book to anyone in 6-8 or Adults. My reasons for this is that the book is full of tragedies that might be harsh on a younger student. Also many words are old fashioned and it may be hard for them to read. If you want to learn about the Titanic and you are younger this book would be good if you like a challenge.
This sounds like a very interesting book that I would actually read, given the choice. What level reading do you think this book is and do you have any interesting facts that might appeal to me?

Review
I would recommend this book to fifth through seventh graders because it has some swearing and a lot of fighting. I think boys might like it more than girls because it seems like a topic that they would enjoy reading about. I would specifically recommend this book to Page because she likes books with action and adventure. I would not recommend this book to anybody who doesn't like stories about World War Two.
I read this book last year was he an escaped airman or was he shot down
DeleteHe was a pilot of a plane that got shot down. He was the only soldier who used his parachute, escaped, and was found by Peter and Kim.
DeleteWould you also recommend this book to 4th grader if it did not have so much swearing?
DeleteThis sounds like a really good book, Olivia! Thank you for the information!
DeleteIt really doesn't have that much swearing, but I think it will be the too complicated for most fourth graders, they might get confused. If you were talking about Natalie, however, I think she would understand it.
DeleteMy next trip is to the book store to find that book!!! It sound really intense and good!
DeleteThis book has swearing?
DeleteYes it has some swearing but not a lot of it. Page, I am so buying The Night Divided when I find it!

I think this is a very good book for 4th grade and up because it is not to hard to read but not very easy, I think it would be a nice challenge for a 4th grader. I like the book because it's giving out most of the details but not the boring ones like the orange in the bowl was orange. Another reason I like the book is because it does a very good job at making it seem like you actually there with him and all of his friend, partners, and his leaders.
I like that in the summary how specific you got and in the review I how you said your favorite part of the book Good Job!!!!

ReplyDeleteTitle: Winning Chess: Tactics and Strategies
Authors: Ted Nottingham, Al Lawrence, and Bob Wade
Genre: Informational
Main Characters: Garry Kasparov, Bobby Fischer, Charlemagne.
# of Pages: 127
Summary: This book talks about different tactics and strategies to use to win a chess game.
There are books about chess?
DeleteYes Alex there are a lot of books about chess. And I have around twenty different books about chess.
DeleteYou made me want to read the book to learn the strategies.
DeleteYes there are many books about chess and I have about 20.

DeleteTitle- Sparky Author- Beverly Gherman
ReplyDeleteGenre- Biography
Main Characters- Charles Schulz
Number of Pages- 117
Summary-
Charles Schulz was born on November 26,1992. Also, his nickname was “Sparky,” as the book says on page 11, “Before he was a week old, his uncle nicknamed him ‘Sparky.’ For some reason the baby reminded him of Sparky, the sad-eyed horse from the popular comic strip Barney Google who unexpectedly became the big winner of a race.”
Sparky, was in the army for quite a long time, but soon he was promoted to being a staff sergeant and also a squad leader.
Recommendation-
I would recommend this book to Reed because she loves Charlie Brown, just like me.
I love Snoopy, so I will probably read this so I can know more about the genius who invented him.
DeleteYAY! I love Snoopy too! Twins!

I have read this book Madison, and I think that you wrote a great summary. Nice Job!

I thought this book was good.

DeleteTitle: The President Has Been Shot
ReplyDeleteAuthor: James L. Swanson
Page Numbers: 198
Genre: Autobiography and a Biography
Main characters: John F.
Beginning Of Story
John F.
Middle Of Story
This is when the assassination process began. He was traveling to Dallas, Texas for the lunch for more than two thousand. This guy that was waiting for him was a guy that Kennedy would not want to meet. This guy wanted to put him to his death.
End Of Story
As they were driving away from the lunch the shots came one after another.
It sounds like a really good book, Payson! Great Job telling about it!

ReplyDeleteAuthor- Margarita Engle
Main Characters-
Setting- Cuba and the USA in 1962
Number of Pages: 185
DeleteThank you very much Nuala and do you know her exact age? It would really help my understanding of the story.
DeleteTitle: Heros of 9/11
ReplyDeleteAuthor: Allan Zullo
Number of Pages: 180 Genre: Informational
Main Characters: Jay Jonas, David Lim, Ross Terranova, Kevin Murray, Mike Kosowski, Chuck Sereika, etc Setting. NYC, Pentagon, Pennsylvania
Summary: This book is (explained simply) 10 stories about 9/11.
DeleteThis sounds like a really good and interesting book. I think you did a good job summarizing the book and getting me hooked on reading it.

ReplyDeleteAuthors: Eric Schlosser and Charles Wilson
Number of pages: 258
Genre: Informational
DeleteI don't usually eat fast food anyway so it didn't really change my outlook on fast food Nuala. I think that you would like book because honestly I was kind of relieved after reading this because it felt nice to know what the truth was about fast food and you might feel the same way if you decide to read this. Have a wonderful day Nuala.

ReplyDeleteAuthor: Clinton Cox.
Number of Pages: 186.
Genre: Biography.
Main Characters: Bess, Cecilia, Houdini.
Setting: U.S.A, Europe.

ReplyDeleteTitle: Titanic Young Survivors
Author: Allan Zullo
Page Count: 177
Genre: Informational
Setting: April 14-15, 1912 when the Titanic went on its maiden voyage
Summary:
This book is about tragedies of young people on the ship the Titanic.
Review:
I would recommend this book to anyone in 6-8 or Adults.
