Title: Black Water Author: D.J. Machale Number of Pages: 427 Genre: Fantasy Main Characters: Bobby Pendragon, Mark, and Courtney Chewtnyde Setting: Second Earth and Eelong Summary: This is the fifth book in the Pendragon series. In this book, Bobby travels to the territory called Eelong. There, he finds out that the dominant race there is a group of cat people. They call themselves klees and there are humans. But the humans are treated like dirty slave animals. The humans are called gars. But the quigs, the evil demon creatures in each territory, are gars as well. Saint Dane has traveled to Eelong hoping to tip the balance and succeed in getting his next territory. But Bobby has come to stop him.
Only a small while after Bobby gets there, the Eelong Traveler dies. So his daughter has to take over. But she doesn’t want to. Her name is Kasha. They find a map and travel to Black Water. There, they find Gunny, the Traveler from First Earth, and they figure out the gars’ master plan. Then, they figure out that Yorn actually died and Saint Dane took his place. So they traveled back to the capital. The gars suddenly start the Advent. That is the master plan of the gars. It is to rescue all the other gars that are in captivity. Then Bobby and Kasha learn about how the klees are going to dump poison on the gars. So they rush to stop them. The klees with the poison left, but Bobby and Kasha go after them to stop the the klees with the poison. Luckily, they do. But all of a sudden, a fleet of klees in their gigs come with 9 more containers of poison. They can’t stop them, so they rush to Black Water. Luckily, they manage to spread the antidote before the poison could kill all the gars. They managed to save the territory. But out of nowhere, Saint Dane declares that he is off to Zadaa. “The girl cried out, “On to Zadaa!” “Saint Dane!” Bobby shouted and ran for her.”(pg. 397) This quote shows that Saint Dane went off to Zadaa.
Review: I really liked this book because it had a lot of excitement, danger, and some suspenseful parts. My favorite part was when they distributed the antidote before it could kill all of the gars. The thing I liked most about this book was that the gars rioted against the klees and tried to free themselves. But instead of killing the klees, they just wanted to get to Black Water. The thing I liked the least was that Saint Dane killed Yorn and tricked them into showing him the location of Black Water. I would recommend this to Bonnie and Violet, because I think that they would like this kind of book.
Lilac Girls By: Martha Hall Kelly Number of Pages: 476 Genre: Narrative Nonfiction Main Characters: Caroline Ferriday, Kasia Kuzmerick, Herta Oberheuser. Setting: A Nazi concentration camp, Ravensbrück. Germany,Paris, New York, and Poland. The time period is from 1939 to 1959. Summary: This book is about the lives of three women who are directly affected by Hitler’s quest for power. Caroline lives in New York and volunteers at the French consulate to help survivors of the Ravensbruck experiments. Kasia lives in Poland and is a courier for the underground resistance movement. She is caught and sent to Ravensbruck. Herta lives in Germany and is a doctor. Herta applies for a government medical position in the concentration camp, Ravensbruck. Reinhard Heydrich was a close friend of Hitler’s who died of injuries from a car accident. The doctor who operated on him did not use sulfa drugs when he operated on him. Hitler was mad because he believed that the reason Heydrich died was because the doctor did not use sulfa drugs. The injury was recreated by doctors to prove to Hitler that not using sulfa was the right decision. The doctors operated on 63 women in the camp. They cut open their legs and inserted glass, dirt, metal, and bacteria and then sewed their legs back up again. All this was done to prove that it was not the doctor’s fault that Heydrich died. Their wounds did not heal properly so they had to hop around camp which is how they got the nickname “the rabbits”, that and the fact that they were being used as test subjects. After the operations the girls were put in a room to “recover.” While they were in the recovery ward they were barely given any water or food, and their bandages were never changed because part of the experiment was to let the wounds get infected. During the last few months of the war the Nazis knew that they were defeated. They also knew that if word got out about the rabbits anyone known to have anything to do with the experiments would either be killed or sent to prison when the war was won. In 1942 they decided to execute all the rabbits. Other Ravensbruck prisoners intervened and helped save the rabbits. All of them had been gathered in a room to be killed. They all believed they were going to die. Before they could be executed a group of Russian prisoners shut down the electrical grid so that the women could hide in attics and under bunkers. They had stayed hidden until 1945 when they were rescued.
Review: It was a really sad book. It took me about two months to read it. Hitler said that experimenting on those women was for the greater good of Germany. Kind of like how now when people experiment on animals they say it is also for the greater good. If humans weren't here nature would take care of itself but we have poisoned everything. So we can be compared to Hitler in a way. I just thought that I would share that with you all even if none of you actually read it. I liked the end of this book because it had a fairly happy ending. I would recommend this book to Aidan because I would like him to think about compassion to animals and humans. I wanted to read this book because I wanted to write about what happened to these people and I didn’t want them to be forgotten.
Book Title: 100 Cupboards Author: N.D. Wilson Number of Pages: 287 Genre: Fantasy Main Characters: Henry, Henrietta, Uncle Frank and Aunt Dotty Setting: Henry, Kansas, present day Summary The book is about a 12 year old boy named Henry. His parents are journalists. While his parents are on a trip in Columbia, they’re kidnapped. Henry is then forced to move to his aunt and uncle's house in Henry, Kansas. There he meets his Uncle Frank and Aunt Dotty, and their three girls Anastasia, Henrietta and Penelope. One night when he’s sleeping, a piece of plaster falls off his wall. He begins prying away at the plaster. He finds a cupboard underneath the plaster. Only Henry and his little cousin Henrietta knows about it. Henry ends up prying more plaster off his wall, and he finds more cupboards. They hide them by taping a bunch of posters together and hanging them over the cupboards. They come to the conclusion that the cupboards lead to other worlds, after a series of strange events. For instance, when they open a cupboard, a breeze blows through Henry’s room. He also finds a puddle of worms on his bed, which is right next to the wall with all of the cupboards. Their grandfather, who died a few years before, had a bed room that they could not get into. It was strangely blocked from the inside, but Henry and Henrietta find a key to get it open. There, they find journals and papers about the cupboards. Shortly after they learn that the cupboard leads to different worlds, Henrietta goes missing. Henry knows that she went into the cupboards. He finds her in an abandoned city. By using their grandfather's journal, they soon realize that they cannot leave unless these things called master locks are put back into place. Uncle Frank goes into the cupboard, because he suspects that they went into them. He also knows about how the cupboards lead to different worlds. He does not find them and leaves the cupboard. Meanwhile, a witch named Nimiane escapes from the cupboards and attacks the family. When Henry and Henrietta get out of the cupboard, they trap the witch in an empty cupboard and get medical help for the family. The end.
Review I really liked the book. It was a little slow at the beginning, but it managed to keep my interest long enough to get to the good parts. It did leave me hanging at the end. I think my favorite part was when they opened his grandfather's room. It was very exciting. I also liked when he saw what I’m guessing was his grandfather's ghost. It describes and old man on page 16 when Henry is in the bathroom at night. “An old man stepped on the landing.” But then on page 31, it says ‘“Grandfathers,” Henrietta finished. She look in Henry’s eyes. “He’s dead.”’ I would recommend this book to kids in 5th and 6th grade because it's a little bit of an easier read
Book Title: Nerve Author: Jeanne Ryan Number of Pages: 294 Genre: Fiction Main Characters: Vee, Ian, Nerve, Sydney, Tommy, Matthew. Setting: Wherever the game sends them. NERVE is a game where people compete by doing difficult and embarrassing dares. Vee decides to do a harmless dare just for fun. Another back-stage cast member named Tommy goes with her to be her cameraman and bodyguard. She has to pour water on herself in a coffee shop while shouting that cold water makes her hot. “Cold water makes me hot! I pour the rest of the cup over my head”(pg 26).After it was posted, the video got lots of attention. Since the video was so popular, the NERVE producers wanted Vee to do another dare to try and win a pair of expensive boots. With the pressure and encouragement of her friends and the wanting of the boots Vee gives in and decides to do another dare.Vee’s second dare involves returning to the coffee shop. She meets a boy named Ian, whom the NERVE producers have chosen. She has to get Ian to order her a drink while she stands in the middle of the store singing “One Hundred Bottles of Beer on the Wall.” Vee and Ian get along well and the audience enjoys seeing them together. So NERVE partners them together. Vee and Ian do many dangerous dares together. Vee has a tough decision to make while many friends are encouraging Vee to continue in the game, people like Tommy are urging her to get out while she can. But during a play Vee sees her best friend Sydney kissing the boy she likes Mathew. She feels Sydney has betrayed her and Matthew has been leading her on. So she decides to ignore Sydney’s advice and keep playing. Vee’s next dare is much different than the others. This time she must confront Sydney about stealing Matthew. She also has to insult Sydney’s performance in the play. Ian has to go with her and embarrass one of Vee’s friends. After it happened they both feel awful. The audience is really liking Vee and Ian so NERVE asks them to be in the grand prize rounds. Vee isn’t sure if she wants to do it but then she sees what her prize would be, a full scholarship to fashion school.
She changes her mind and decides to participate risking all her past prizes and her parents trust. Vee and Ian are sent to Club Poppy. Where there are a bunch of other teenagers. For a dare each player gets sent to a different room alone. Vee gets put in a room sitting in a replica of her car. She smells gas, like she did one night when she fell asleep in the garage. She ponders whether she really did try to kill herself, or if it was an accident like she’s always believed. “The smell seems stronger and my head feels fuzzy”(pg 202).This makes her realize NERVE isn’t as harmless as she thought. Afterwards everyone is told to choose one victim. Vee having already gotten on the bad side of some players, is chosen. Everyone is given guns. Even though NERVE is supposedly just a game, the guns feel real and everyone is told to point them at Vee. To make things even worse for Vee, Sydney and Tommy get sent into the game. Vee is starting to get scared and screams at all the people watching to call 911. But the audience thinks it just part of the game. Read to find out what happens next!!
I liked this book a lot. I thought it was very interesting. It kept my attention because new things kept happening and you couldn’t tell what new dares could be given. My favorite part was when Vee had completed her first dare and was super proud of herself. I would recommend it to any of the 8th graders.
Violet, I have not read maze runner but in some ways it is similar to hunger games in the ways that there are people controlling what happens to them. But it is much less intense.

The boys tell them about it and they get in trouble.
Your Review (How did you like the book, and why? What was your favorite part? What did you like the most/the least about this book? Who would you recommend it to, and why?) I liked when Chad, Matt, Andrew and Taylor took sticks and raced them down the creek. I liked when they decided to jump into the creek and got sucked into a whirlpool. I did not like that there was not a lot of excitement after that so it did not keep my attention. The beginning of the book really didn’t draw my attention. I would recommend it to people who like the outdoors. I think 6th-8th graders would like this book. Your Book Blog Question Responses
Book Title- Firegirl Author- Tony Abbott Number of Pages- 145 Genre- Realistic Fiction Main Characters- Jeff, Tom, Jessica Setting- Present day, St. Cathrine’s school Summary This is a story about Tom Bender and how he navigates his way around Jessica, a disfigured burn victim. He struggles to deal with her presence in his neighborhood and class. At St. Catherine’s School, Mrs. Tracy prepares the students for Jessica, who has moved to town in order to get special medical attention. Despite the preparations for Jessica, the teacher is unable to offset her shocking appearance. Most of the students avoid looking at her altogether. Mrs. Tracy arranges to have Jessica sit between Jeff (Tom’s best friend) and Tom. Jeff moves his desk away. Tom stays in place and struggles to appear normal even if he feels scared on the inside. The students begin to come up with stories about how Jessica was burned in a fire. True to the nature of rumors, the stories grow. After school one day, Tom learns the real story about Jessica when the teacher asks him to deliver homework to her. From this point Tom begins an uneasy friendship with Jessica. Tom describes himself as the sweaty, chubby kid. He feels that nobody really notices him. This accounts for his sensitivity as he interacts with Jessica. Their awkward friendship begins to gain depth until Jessica’s family must leave down to have access to another hospital in a different city. Tom is changed forever for having known her for a short period of time. Tom does his best in a tough situation. His struggle to be fair and good is what makes the story compelling. He is not extraordinary; he is rather ordinary. The changes in his character are not extreme one way or another. Tom views friendship and deals with acceptance: it is about what stirs inside when a person looks beyond the surface and seeks a genuine connection with. The theme of this story is dont judge a book by its cover. Jessica might look different then everyone else but she is still a loving, nice person on the inside. Your Review (How did you like the book, and why? What was your favorite part? What did you like the most/the least about this book? Who would you recommend it to, and why?) I liked this book it was very interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone in 8th grade or above because it’s a lot to take in. It gets kind of hard to understand what Jessica is actually going through.
Main Character(s): Zeb Holloway (The Backup Quarterback)
Genre: Fiction (Novel)
Setting: New Hampshire
Review: I thought it was more of a simple type of book. Nothing to it, which made it not as fun to read. Could of been a lot more impactful if they didn’t talk about only 7 days in 233 pages. If they had more backstory (Or just plain up story) it could of been a lot better.
Summary This book is about a senior high schooler. Who is also a backup qb for his New Hampshire football team. T.T, a black kid, which he is one of the only ones since the school is primarily white. Got injured while running a read option type play. Getting tackled and breaking his leg/knee. Pg 1 Paragraph 1 “T.T’s leg buckling under him, heard the bone snap, heard T.T scream like a Fox Zeb has once heard a scream when his uncle George Pushee had darted an arrow through the animal’s cheek.” I chose this quote because it is the start of the whole week, and also the story of the new starting QB Zeb. A possible new star. And this is where Zeb comes in, he is the back up. It Only playing one game that whole season. And that one game was crazy and they just about won. But the main point is that Zeb starts in the biggest game of his life. For the state championship. As T.T got injured just a week before. Putting the whole town looking at Zeb. Hoping he could win them the championship. He has so much potential. And even a college recruit said so. It is all up to him.
In the end he sadly couldn’t reach his hype. Losing the game 30-7. Page 215 Paragraph 3 “The final score was 30-7. Zeb lined up with the rest of his team and passed down the ranks of Merrymeeting players slapping hands and saying congratulations”I chose this because it shows that sadly they lost, but they gave it their all. And no matter what they made it to the championship. like. But in the end, he gave it his all. He didn’t win but the effort was their. Even his mom wasn’t unhappy with it, he was still happy that he got the chance. Page 225 Paragraph 3 “ We do our best, he said. I thought you should know. She reached across suddenly and hugged him. He felt her crying more than saw it.” I chose this because she was still happy for him no matter what. Even if he didn’t do his best or his team didn’t do the best. She is still so happy for him.

I would recommend this book to people who like historical fiction. It would be good for 4th and 5th graders. People who like dogs would like this book because a dog is one of the main characters. My least favorite part of the book is when Ranger steps on glass and gets hurt. I like animals and hate to see them hurt.

My favorite part was when Vee had completed her first dare and was super proud of herself. I would recommend it to any of the 8th graders.
That sounds very intense.
DeleteGood job. Would you say this book it like hunger games or maze runner ( if you’ve read maze runner.)
DeleteThis sounds really interesting. Can I read it?
DeleteYes you can Ella!
DeleteViolet, I have not read maze runner but in some ways it is similar to hunger games in the ways that there are people controlling what happens to them. But it is much less intense.
DeleteSounds like a really good book nice job
DeleteThanks. This book sounds very good!
DeleteWhat dose nerve really mean?

DeleteNERVE is just the name of the game. I don’t think it stands for anything.

Eventually they see things that look familiar and realize they are close to home. They are home in time for dinner but are wet and very dirty. They usually spend long days outside so their parents had no idea what had happened to them.

Book Title- Firegirl
ReplyDeleteAuthor- Tony Abbott
Number of Pages- 145
Genre- Realistic Fiction
Main Characters- Jeff, Tom, Jessica
Setting- Present day, St. Cathrine’s school
Summary This is a story about Tom Bender and how he navigates his way around Jessica, a disfigured burn victim.
This sound like a very good book!!

Summary
This book is about a senior high schooler.

Your Review (How did you like the book, and why? What was your favorite part? What did you like the most/the least about this book? Who would you recommend it to, and why?) I liked it because it is interesting and I learned about the great earthquake in San Francisco in 1906. I would recommend this book to people who like historical fiction. It would be good for 4th and 5th graders. People who like dogs would like this book because a dog is one of the main characters. My least favorite part of the book is when Ranger steps on glass and gets hurt. I like animals and hate to see them hurt.
